Community Health

The importance of the preservation of greenspaces is referenced throughout Scottish Government policy around mental health and wellbeing. Invergordon is officially classed as a deprived area and with growing industry due to the advent of the Green Freeport, now more than ever the protection of its greenspace is critical to the health and wellbeing of its residents.

"[In] Invergordon... this one place sits like an oasis in the landscape."

An unprecedented number of objections were submitted by the community against the proposal. The objections spoke about physical and mental wellbeing, families and children, archaeology and history, exercise, education, tourism, walking, playing, connections with others, flowers, protected species and magnificent trees. Not one submission was in favour of the development.

The space is where so many of the local community come to breathe a sigh of relief. It is a vital resource for a town that is already struggling. We cannot afford to lose it.

“The simple method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees, observing nature around you… [it] has been a lifeline…”

"The woods are also a significant resource to local children for play, to residents of all ages for walking, or simply a quiet place to get away from the struggles of daily life for a while."

"I feel that there is an emotional and spiritual connection that people have with these woods... a sense of place, an important part of belonging and connection to our local heritage."
